Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) in Indian Country

The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) program provides training and program assistance to tribal jurisdictions for the purpose of developing systems to substantially implement the requirements of SORNA. Assistance is also focused on enhancing and sustaining SORNA programs and team development. Training and program assistance may be accomplished in a number of ways, including conference workshops, regional trainings, and onsite personalized program assistance. In addition to Tribal Sex Offender Registration and Management , the SMART Office offers the Tribal Community Safety Net and Accountability Program. This program assists the selected tribal community project site with developing a holistic healing program for those affected by crime by providing support for the victim, encouraging responsibility for the offender, and facilitating changes designed to minimize the risk of future abuse. In addition to assisting the specific project site, training and technical assistance will include the development of resources and subject matter expert availability for future project sites. SORNA refers to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act which is Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (Public Law 109-248). SORNA provides a comprehensive set of minimum standards for sex offender registration and notification in the United States and is administered through the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART). The mission of the SMART Office is to protect the public by supporting the national implementation of a comprehensive sex offender registration and notification system.
