Join us for an intensive 2-day training that focuses on understanding and building relationships between the forensic pathologist, homicide investigator, and prosecutor in successfully investigating and prosecuting child homicide cases. Learn autopsy protocols, forensic essentials, and the criticality of determining the cause and manner of death. Understand the unique aspects of investigating a child homicide including interviewing and interrogation, suspect pool development and the role and importance of the prosecutor in gaining appropriate convictions.

Role of the Medical Examiner in Child Homicide Investigations
This module will describe the role and responsibilities of the medical examiner. Jurisdictional issues, cause and manner of death, classifications, why medical examiners will initially pend cases, time of death, autopsy surgery, and death certificate will be discussed. In addition, the module will describe what the medical examiner needs from the scene, investigators, statements, observations, chain of custody, photography, artifacts, pattern injuries. The module will also discuss how the investigation of child homicides in association with the findings at autopsy can make for a successful prosecution. Examples of child homicides will be provided throughout the presentation and an interactive discussion is encouraged.

This module will discuss why and how the homicide investigator needs to communicate with the Medical Examiner. This will lead into an interactive discussion with the use of hypothetical cases that illustrate this vital relationship.
