About

This 3.5 day team-based training will guide existing Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) to improve their response to Child Sex Trafficking (CST) and assist those seeking to establish a formal MDT in their communities to effectively respond to CST cases.  Subject matter experts will work with teams to identify gaps and develop short and long-term response plans.   Prerequisite: Attendance at a course such as System Response to High Risk Victims-Child Sex Trafficking (HRV CST) or Investigative Strategies in Child Abduction Cases (ISCAC), or have a working knowledge of child sex trafficking.

Course objectives, introductions, current team challenges, capabilities, and strengths.

Understand Child Sex Trafficking
Overview of Child Sex Trafficking (CST), Similarities and differences between the traditional Child Abuse MDT and a CST MDT. Various stages of a CST case. Introduction of fact pattern.

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Discipline Breakout and Report Session
Using the fact pattern based on a real-life case presented earlier, students will be divided into their respective disciplines to identify how each group would approach the case. Groups will report their findings to the class. Variations of the fact pattern will be introduced.

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Survivor Story
A case study will be shown to help illustrate the complexities often associated with CST cases. Survivor's perspective of experiences of how the system worked or failed. Challenges and obstacles in CST cases.

4:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Wrap up - Beginning a Gap Analysis
Teams will begin to identify their problems, gaps, and needs.

Using the results from both the discipline and team discussions, teams will identify where they are on the CST Response Continuum.

Role of CACs in an Effective CST Response
Overview of the Child Advocacy Center current engagement and preparedness for responding to CST cases.

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Proactive Response to CST Cases
High Risk Victim Concept, victim location and recovery strategies, proactive investigations, proactive community response. CyberTips, advanced training for stakeholders, and introduction of the MDT CST Action Plan

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Team Breakout Session
Teams will breakout to begin to identify their goals, stakeholders, action steps, benchmarks, and timeline

Technology in CST Cases
Different types and uses of technology to recruit, market, control, and exploit victims

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
CPS Risk Assessment Screening
Overview of a variety of disciplines, including CPS, Juvenile Court/Probation and Schools

Trauma and Mental Health Considerations in a CST Response
Overview of trauma and its effects on mental health, therapeutic interventions for the clinical treatment of CST survivors, and specific strategies for mitigating the effects of trauma across all disciplines.

Role of Advocates in an Effective CST Response
Overview of the Advocate's role and responsibilities with respect to CST survivors. Differences and obstacles often associated with CST survivors and how they differ from traditional MDTs and case responses.

Preventive steps MDTS can implement, system needs which decrease the risks of victimization, Public Service Announcements - target hardening, community outreach and raising awareness, training matrix, Q&A with teams

Each team will present their team's Action Plan for responding to child sex trafficking cases

Advancing Your Team Response Along the Continuum
Effectively moving from your action plan to implementation of the plan, effective team dynamics, reasonable short and long term goals, realistic expectations, overcoming obstacles both internal and external (passion versus power, determining agency POCs, and identifying decision makers), and informal versus formal agency agreements.
