Professionally trained courthouse facility dogs are working throughout the country in prosecutor’s offices, child advocacy centers, and family courts to assist crime victims and other individuals while they participate in stressful legal proceedings. As legally neutral companions for witnesses during the investigation and prosecution of crimes, courthouse facility dogs have a dramatic impact on the ability and willingness of the most vulnerable witnesses to describe what happened. Courthouse facility dogs also provide emotional support to all participants in family court proceedings and in treatment courts. Prosecuting attorneys, defense attorneys, judges, and victim advocates will learn about best practices in the use of courthouse facility dogs to enhance services offered to clients without raising any legal issues in the courtroom.
