Learn how to support victims, gather and maintain evidence, manage crime scenes, conduct effective interviews and interrogations, utilize investigative resources (SANE nurses and support services), and prepare cases for prosecution.

Upon completion of this training, you will be able to: * Define sex crimes, elements of each offense, and consider trends and truths. * Review, consider, and apply investigative strategies for sexual assault cases and overall sensitive crimes. * Identify victim services and methods to best serve victims of sexual assault. * Consider and develop investigative skills through case study and case prosecution outcomes. * Discover current evidence collection and storage methods for sexual assault related crimes. * Develop a suspect in stranger sexual assaults. * Explore ways to build effective relationships while maximizing efforts with a multi-disciplinary team response to sexual assault investigations. * Review and consider the role of the SANE nurse in sexual assault investigations. * Explore and apply interview and interrogation techniques to maximize case outcomes while limiting traumatic exposure to victims and witnesses. * Explore special circumstances of sex crime investigations, including alcohol and drug impairment, Title IX conditions, and PREA.

James C. Pittman served in the United States Air Force near Washington, DC. James entered law enforcement in 2002 as a civilian police officer for the Department of Defense in Minneapolis. From 2003-2014, he worked for the Great Lakes Police Department in Illinois, where he rose through the ranks of patrol officer, lead police officer and supervisory police officer. In 2014, James started as a police officer for the Milwaukee Police Department. After several years of patrolling the downtown entertainment and nightclub areas, he was promoted to detective in October 2020. Since then, James has been assigned to the Sensitive Crimes Unit, responding to sexual assaults, child abuse, infant death and missing persons investigations.

Kathryn Marsh is the Co-Founder of Right Response Consulting (RRC) and a career prosecutor of seventeen years. She presently serves as Special Counsel, Assistant Chief of the Special Victims Family Violence Unit and the Legislative Co-Chair for the State’s Attorney’s Office in Prince George’s County, Maryland. For the last twelve years, Marsh has specialized in the child abuse, child exploitation, internet crimes and sexual assault cases. She also functions as professional trainer for law enforcement, fellow prosecutors and staff, as well state and community organizations on a variety of issues. Marsh was instrumental in establishing a Child Advocacy Center in Calvert County as well as a juvenile human trafficking high risk protocol. In Prince George’s County, Ms. Marsh developed the ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) investigation and prosecution policy.
