**Webinar is pending DOJ approval.** *This webinar will not be recorded*. “IoT Spy in the Fuse Box” – in this case study, a victim was being stalked and terrorized by her ex who always knew where she was. She believed that her vehicle was being tracked, but she could not find the tracking device. After contacting the police and also looking herself for a tracker unsuccessfully, she eventually took her vehicle to an auto shop. At the auto shop, they discovered a hidden cellular-enabled GPS tracker in her fuse box. The device was receiving power from the vehicle, so it did not need a battery. The device was not an off-the-shelf tracker, but instead it was a custom IoT tracker with a GPS module and a SIM card. It was later determined that the suspect worked at a company that installed these IoT trackers in fleet vehicles, and he had stolen the equipment and installed it in her vehicle. This case was of particular interest because, although there have been multiple cases with commercially purchased IoT tracking devices, this was the first one with a custom implementation.

Cody Vigil has served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since 2009. As a Detective and Digital Forensic Examiner, he has been tasked with processing and examining a multitude of digital devices ranging from mobile phones and computers to video and IoT devices. He has over 2164 hours of police specific training, 636 of which are in areas relevant to conducting examinations on electronic storage devices and associated techniques. Complementing his practical experience, Cody holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
