Drug Endangered Children(DEC): From Tribal Community Awareness to Action

Join us to discuss approaches to overcoming the challenges in aligning agencies and systems responsible for preventing, intervening, and treating these issues to change the trajectories of the lives of drug endangered children. Explore best practices in breaking the multi-generational cycles of misuse and neglect. Examine steps to implement the Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Approach, a comprehensive strategy based on a common vision, collaboration that is on-going between various disciplines and agencies, and on-going changes in practice. Participate in trainer-led discussions and hands-on exercises that demonstrate how implementing collaboration enhances the likelihood of better outcomes for drug endangered children.

About

Drug endangered children are part of a very large, and growing population of children whose lives have been seriously and negatively impacted by dangerous drugs. Thousands of these children across our country go unnoticed and do not receive the necessary care and treatment to heal from these abusive environments. If ignored and left unsupported these children continue to be victims caught in a cycle of substance misuse. It will take every discipline to help these children that are in every community. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: * Gain an overall awareness about drug endangered children and the risks they face * Identify the risks they drug endangered children face so that professions can understand their role in identification, response, intervention, and support * Explain the benefits of multi-disciplinary and collaborative responses * Cite examples of the opportunities, including those often missed, to identify children living in dangerous drug environments * Describe the benefits of intervention at the earliest possible point when endangerment is suspected in order to reduce physical and psychological harm * Explore strategies to incorporate unique and often limited resources within a community to apply them in a manner that provides better care for drug endangered children * Recognize how our own experiences, attitudes, values and emotions impact effective collaboration under the DEC Approach * Gain insight about our collaborative partners to decrease frustrations when utilizing the DEC Approach * Demonstrate how utilizing collaboration leads to more informed decisions and increased likelihood of better outcomes on behalf of drug endangered children and their families under the DEC Approach * Implement changes in identification of children, mandatory reporting, and evidence and information collection in our respective practices on behalf of drug endangered children
