Consider minority perceptions of policing due to historical events and ways to overcome some of these barriers. Discover strategies for creating a “learning organizational culture” while appreciating the fragile relationship with our communities. A focus will be on the importance of police legitimacy through ethics, empathy and equity.

Fees include 16 hours of training, program materials, instructional costs, and refreshment breaks. Participants are responsible for costs and arrangements related to meals, travel, and lodging.

Dr. Theodore Darden   Professor, Social Justice, College of DuPage

Dr. Theodore Darden has been a professor of Justice Studies since 2006, and as department chair 2009-2013, at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. Previous to this, he worked in law enforcement for 17 years, where he obtained the rank of patrol sergeant. Darden was instrumental in bringing community policing to the forefront in the State of Wisconsin. His success in lowering crime rates, building community trust and partnerships, and addressing homelessness at the University of Wisconsin- Madison gained him statewide recognition when he was named the law enforcement officer of the year by the Attorney General’s Office in the State of Wisconsin. He established the WI Association of Community Oriented Police (WACOP) in 1996 and served as its first president. Dr. Darden joined the WI Department of Justice Law Enforcement Training and Standards Bureau where he developed curriculum, provided consultation, and assisted in overseeing police training in the state’s 17 police academies.
