Gil Van Attenhoven is a retired Senior Special Agent in Charge with the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, with more than 29 years of law enforcement experience specializing in complex narcotics investigations, drug trafficking trends, and interagency coordination.
Throughout his career, Gil led major investigations targeting organized drug trafficking organizations and oversaw multi-jurisdictional enforcement operations at the local, state, and federal levels. His expertise includes emerging synthetic drug threats, fentanyl trafficking patterns, and evolving polysubstance trends impacting public safety nationwide.
Gil serves as a national-level instructor and subject matter expert, delivering drug trend and opioid response training for organizations including the Regional Counterdrug Training Academy, the Midwest Counterdrug Training Center, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) programs, the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Office, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the National Criminal Justice Training Center, the California Narcotic Officers’ Association, and CA Probation Departments.
Gil holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento. He is a past president of the California Narcotic Officers’ Association (CNOA) and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session 209.
