In an era where the Internet of Things (IoT) and connected devices are ever-present, their role in gathering intelligence has become critical, especially in law enforcement. These devices are always watching, listening, sensing, creating logs and data that can be pivotal in criminal investigations. In order for communities to support law enforcement’s use of these technologies, they must be accessed in a legally and ethical manner. Current case law and best practices will be discussed by experts in the field. Specialized training tracks will be offered in the areas of home monitoring and security devices, smart wearables, tracking devices and vehicle data systems. Other internet-based devices will be considered as well. During the conference, we will dive into the data and information internet-based devices create/record which can indicate a person’s proximity to a crime and establish relationships between victims and suspects. His final role was as the Bureau Chief of Major Crimes, Cyber, and Forensics, where he led investigations into criminal and violent crimes, managed victim services, search and rescue operations, the crime analyst team, human trafficking cases, missing persons, and the Language Services Support Unit. Erik Cowick has been a police officer for 8 years, with the last 3 years being within the investigative unit. He currently is a Detective in the criminal investigative unit in Quincy IL. Erik graduated from Southern Illinois University with a B.S. in Criminal justice. Erik is currently serving in the U.S. Army Reserves as a First Sergeant for a Drill Sergeant unit. During Erik’s law enforcement career, he developed an interest in Digital forensics. Erik’s has used digital evidence to help identify suspects and solve complex cases.

He received the DOJ Director's Award, the AAG's Award for Distinguished Service, and the Prosecutor of the Year Award from the Indiana Anti-Sexual Violence Movement. He also teaches at Indiana University.
Trey Amick is a forensics investigator with a background in both law enforcement and corporate investigations. As a detective with the Rock Hill Police Department in South Carolina, Trey was sworn as a Special Deputy United States Marshal and supported the US Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force. Previously, he served in roles in both Patrol and Professional Standards. Most recently, as a corporate investigator, Trey managed the Enterprise Cyber Education and Awareness Team at Capital One, where he also served as part of the Cyber Technical Investigations Team. Trey is currently the Director, Forensic Consultants Team at Magnet Forensics, where he assists in the development of Magnet AXIOM and provides skilled support to customers with his combined knowledge of AXIOM and digital forensics. Trey is also the President of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA), New York Metro Chapter.

Prior to retiring from law enforcement in August 2020, Detective Wayne Nichols worked for the Henderson Police Department in Nevada. During his tenure, he worked ICAC related investigations to include proactive enticement cases, P2P investigations, as well as being a forensic examiner. In his last 5 years as a detective, he exclusively investigated robberies and homicides. Since 2013, Wayne Nichols has consulted for Fox Valley Technical College, where he continues to teach other law enforcement investigators how to investigate the online exploitation of children. Wayne Nichols holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminal justice.
