Pediatric aquatic abuse has a high risk of being missed as it can lack visible injuries, can silence the victim literally and figuratively, and being a form of asphyxiation, can later present as respiratory illnesses or other injuries. Aquatic homicides are at risk of both cause and manner of death misdiagnosis, partially because drowning is a circumstance-dependent, diagnosis of exclusion that can facilitate active staging by offenders.

Andrea has 30+ years of experience in the field of submerged evidence/body recovery, aquatic investigations & water rescue training. She is the Vice President for Lifeguard Systems, Inc. and she has consulted on, reviewed, and/or studied more than 4,000 body-found-in-water cases including buckets, bathtubs, pools, rivers, lakes & oceans as well as diving related fatality cases. For 20+ years, she served as a medicolegal death investigator private contractor for the Dutchess County Medical Examiner, and she has 18 years of experience as an EMT. She is a published author & has taught law enforcement, military members, firefighters, medical personnel, death investigators, divers & jurisprudence personnel worldwide in Aquatic Abuse, Death, and Homicidal Drowning Investigation programs, in aquatic rescue/recovery & dive classes. She has a B.A. (Univ. of Michigan) & a Masters in Forensic Investigations (Univ. of New Haven). She is also a Fellow of the America Academy of Forensic Sciences.
