The responsibilities of the modern Public Information Officer (PIO) cover a breadth like never before. Communication and transparency in person, online, and in print are expectations today. Identify the responsibilities of the PIO during a missing child incident and examine why a partnership with the media is vital to quickly recover missing children and solve the cases. Garner preparation tips and employ a checklist to complete the steps of a successful PIO briefing. Examine pitfalls in the police/media relationship and explore ways to overcome them. Roleplay a missing child incident and learn hands-on how to apply what you have learned.

This training is designed for those who are assigned to release information to the public regarding missing children incidents, from AMBER Alerts to Endangered Missing Children, whether full-time or part-time. The training will prepare PIOs to effectively communicate with the public and partner with the media during missing child incidents. Upon completion of this training, you will develop capabilities to: * Define the challenges of the modern PIO * Recognize distinguishing characteristics of the AMBER Alert media release * Employ effective press conference preparation and management of logistical procedures * Identify best approaches to forming media partnerships
* Law Enforcement and civilians tasked with release of Public Information during a missing child incident * Supervisors or command staff who supervise the PIO staff in their organization

There is NO FEE to attend this training; however, pre-registration is required. The deadline to register is July 24, 2023. Registrations will still be accepted after this date based on your qualifications to attend and if seats are still available. Tuition, student materials, and instructional costs are provided by the AMBER Alert Training & Technical Assistance Program. Approval to attend this training is subject to the approval of the host agency as well as your qualifications submitted on your registration.
